I mean, maybe the dip was just coincidence and not the hawk, @avery629's buddy could be reading too much into it.

My buddy Mike had the exact same thing happen with his juncos last fall. He switched to a premium mix and the feeder went dead for a solid three weeks, then suddenly they were back like nothing happened. He figured out later there was a big hawk nesting nearby and the birds were just laying low for a while.
