Squirrel chewed through my finch feeder cable in Nashville last Tuesday
I woke up to find the whole feeder on the ground and about 40 thistle seeds scattered across my deck, so I ended up patching it with some scrap wire from my shed but now the squirrels are just climbing the nearby tree and jumping straight onto the top, has anyone else had this kind of issue with those metal cable feeders?

The whole "squirrels just climbing the nearby tree and jumping straight onto the top" thing - man, that's a classic example of how squirrels treat bird feeders like a puzzle they're determined to solve. In my experience, once they figure out one way in, they'll keep trying new methods until they either get the seed or break the feeder. I've noticed this pattern with a lot of things in daily life, not just feeders. Like how when you fix one leak in a roof, water finds another spot, or when you patch a hole in a fence, the dog digs a new one. It's like nature's way of saying "you can't outsmart us forever." Your mileage may vary, but I've found that adding a baffle or a cage around the feeder is the only thing that really slows them down long-term.
