My cedar planter box split open after one hard freeze in Denver

Built it in October with deck screws and no drainage gaps, and by January the whole front panel bowed out like a pregnant whale, so has anyone else had luck with metal corner brackets or should I just rebuild with cedar strips every 2 years?
