PSA: check how deep your fence posts are before you build anything against them
I put up a 10x12 shed kit in my backyard three weeks ago and anchored it to the fence line on the east side for extra bracing. Last Saturday we got about an inch and a half of rain in two hours here in Springfield, and that whole fence section leaned in toward the shed. When I dug down to see what happened, the posts were only about 14 inches deep with a couple of handfuls of concrete at the bottom. My neighbor's fence was built by the same guy back in 2019, and his posts are the same way. I ended up pulling the shed back off, sinking four new posts at 30 inches, and redoing the anchors. If you are planning a shed, pergola, or anything heavy near an existing fence, dig a test hole first. Has anyone else run into shallow posts like this on a fence that looked fine from the outside?
