That one neighbor's patio comment still bugs me

Last spring I was pouring a small 10x12 slab for a fire pit area and my neighbor walked over, watched for a minute, then said 'you know that's gonna crack, right?' Instead of arguing I asked him why he thought so. He pointed out I hadn't put in any control joints and the base wasn't compacted deep enough. He was right, I cut the joints that afternoon and the slab's still fine 8 months later. Has anyone else had a random passerby give advice that actually saved their build?

Used to blow off random advice from people walking by, figured most of them were just trying to look smart. But that neighbor nailed it on the head, and I've seen enough cracked slabs to know he was right. Now I actually stop and listen when someone offers a tip, especially if they sound like they've poured concrete before.
