Vent: my buddy's deck in Flagstaff went from $4k to $9k in one lumber aisle trip
So my friend finally got his permit approved for a 16x20 deck out behind his place in Flagstaff and we went to price it out together. He had a rough number in his head around $4k because that's what his dad paid for the same size deck back in 2019. The yard pulled up current pricing and the framing lumber alone came to $9,200, so the whole thing is on hold while he figures out if he does composite or waits a season. Has anyone here actually built through a price swing like that, and did you switch materials or just eat the cost?
My wife still brings up the "investment" I made in 2021 when I paid $52 a sheet for 7/16 OSB and thought I was being smart by buying a whole pallet. It sat in the garage for 8 months and warped so bad it looked like a Pringle, so joke was on me there. For your buddy, $9,200 just for framing is nuts, but waiting a season is a gamble since nobody knows where prices land. Composite decking would dodge some of the lumber pain but the boards themselves jumped too, and the hidden fasteners and framing still eat a chunk of the budget.
