My $40 kitchen scale turned out to be the best thing I ever got for baking

I used to just scoop and level my flour for years, thinking it was close enough. Then I tried a recipe for macarons that totally failed, and a friend asked if I weighed my ingredients. I hadn't. So I grabbed a basic digital scale for about forty bucks. The next batch was perfect. Now I weigh everything, even for simple cookies. It's crazy how much a 'cup' of flour can change depending on how you scoop it. My stuff comes out the same every single time now. Has anyone else found that one cheap tool made a huge difference for them?

Forty bucks for a scale is a lot, mine was like ten.

Yeah, is yours actually staying consistent? I had a ten dollar one too and it would show me at 175 one minute then 181 the next (like, no joke, same spot on the floor). I finally caved and got a $50 one after my old scale straight up told me I gained 6 pounds overnight, which I'm pretty sure isn't possible unless I ate a whole Thanksgiving turkey in my sleep. So I totally get why someone would spend more, even if it hurts a little at first.

Does your ten dollar scale actually work well or does it give you a different weight every time you step on it? Mine was cheap too and it was all over the place, which is why I finally spent more. You get what you pay for sometimes.
