Rant: I still prefer butter over shortening in pie crust no matter what anyone says
Made 6 pies for Thanksgiving last year using butter only and they came out flaky and golden every time, while my sister's shortening crusts tasted like nothing. Am I missing something or does shortening actually make a difference besides being easier to work with?

Give me butter any day - shortening just tastes like lard with amnesia.

Oh man, that's a fantastic description (shortening with amnesia - I'm stealing that). But seriously, do you notice a difference in texture when you bake with butter versus shortening, or is it purely a taste thing for you?
