The $9 bakery croissant in Austin that broke my brain

Stopped in at a new patisserie near South Congress last Saturday and they wanted nine bucks for a plain croissant. I get rent is crazy but that thing was smaller than my fist and tasted like it had been sitting since 7am. For that price I can buy a whole bag of flour and butter and fail gloriously at laminating it myself. Has anyone else hit a point where fancy bakery prices just make you want to stay home and bake your own disasters?

Is it just me, or does the markup on croissants feel like the biggest scam in food right now? I mean, yeah, they take skill and time, but nine bucks for something that's basically butter and air is a hard sell when my grocery store's day-old bin has them for a dollar. Honestly, I've ruined more batches of dough than I can count, but at least my failures cost me pocket change instead of a parking ticket.
