A shy teenager's haircut request shifted my approach

He mumbled so quietly I almost missed it. After I gave him the style he wanted, he smiled for the first time. That showed me how important it is to really listen.

Tbh calling it "just a haircut" is how my barber started his side gig saving on therapy bills.

That's a nice moment but it's just a haircut. You're probably reading way too much into a simple smile. Not every quiet kid needs a life lesson from the barber chair.

My old barber shop had a jar of lollipops by the cash register. It was for kids after their cut. Saw a dad tell his son he couldn't have one because he didn't talk enough. That small stuff sticks with you. Calling it just a haircut misses how those minutes are some of the only calm a person gets all week. The chair is where a lot of guys finally unclench their jaw.
