Dollar store yarn changed my project plans after a chat with my aunt

Honestly, I always swore by craft store yarn, but my aunt Deb swears by those $2 skeins at the discount bin near her place in Tucson. She told me, "It's all just string until you make it something," and that stuck with me. So last week I grabbed six random skeins for $11 and made a blanket that actually holds up after three washes. Ngl, I used to judge cheap yarn hard, but now I'm wondering if the snobbery is just about brand names, not quality. Has anyone else found hidden gems in the random dollar store fiber section?

Three washes is the real test, fair enough. I grabbed a dollar store skein once for a hat and it pilled up like crazy after two weeks. The gauge was all over the place too, twisted in weird spots. Maybe you got lucky, or maybe your aunt's got a whole different batch down there. I'd need to see it hold up past six months before I call it a hidden gem.
