Showerthought: That $3 bread machine from Goodwill bakes better loaves than my $200 KitchenAid ever did

Used to spend 20 minutes kneading dough by hand every Sunday, but after I grabbed that dusty, rusted bread machine for three bucks at the Goodwill on Elm Street last fall, I just toss everything in and let it do the work, anyone else score a random appliance that totally changed their kitchen routine?

Is that Goodwill still have that weird smell of old carpet and Febreze? Because my bread machine came from there too and the first loaf tasted oddly like mothballs. I had to run it empty three times before the smell went away. Now it makes the BEST sourdough though, way better than my fancy KitchenAid ever did. It's like the machine knows it was almost trash and tries extra hard.

Mothballs? That seems like a stretch honestly. Pretty sure those bread machines are just built different back then, not some kind of redemption arc. Weird smells usually just need a good vinegar rinse.
