Had a seized freehub body on a customer's gravel bike that wouldn't budge

Tbh, it was on a 3 year old Trek Checkpoint that had seen a lot of mud. I tried the usual tricks with a bench vise and a big Allen key, but it was totally stuck. Honestly, I ended up using a heat gun on the hub shell for about 30 seconds, just enough to expand the aluminum, and it came right off. Has anyone else had to get that aggressive with a freehub lately?

Yeah, the "wouldn't budge" part is so familiar. That feeling when the vise and the big lever just aren't doing anything is the worst. The heat gun trick is a solid last resort for that kind of corrosion weld. I've been there with a few hubs from wet winter riding, and a little careful heat really is the only way sometimes.

Totally, it's that moment when you're just staring at the part, knowing you've tried everything else. I had a bottom bracket that was basically one piece with the frame after a few salty winters. Ended up using a propane torch on the shell for a few seconds, just enough to break the bond without cooking the paint. That sharp "crack" sound when it finally lets go is so satisfying. You just have to respect the heat and know when to stop.
