Realized I was facing the wrong way when truing wheels for years
I used to always stand with my back to the wheel and look straight down at the rim. Last week a guy at the co-op told me to stand off to the side and sight down the rim instead. It took about 5 minutes for me to see how much I'd been missing. Has anyone else had a basic habit that someone just pointed out was wrong?

Why would you want to see the rim from a weird angle like that?

Came across this article from some photography blog the other day that actually explained the science behind it. They said shooting from that angle catches the rim's reflection in a way that makes the whole setup look deeper and more dramatic. @alicecooper it's not just about being weird for the sake of it, there's a technical reason behind it. Plus half the time people do it to avoid glare from overhead lights, which can totally ruin a shot. I tried it once with my own setup and was surprised how much better the rim stood out.
