Question about slow burn shows: people keep calling them boring after 2 episodes and I think they're missing the point
Finished the pilot of a crime drama on a Sunday night and my buddy quit at episode 2 saying nothing happens. But the whole thing is the setup. By episode 5 the little side glances and the diner scene pay off in a way that would not land if they rushed it.
How many episodes do you give a slow show before you bail?
Man, a buddy of mine did the exact same thing with a show last year. He tapped out around episode 3 saying it was going nowhere, then came back weeks later after his wife kept watching and he had to admit the payoff hit him hard. He told me the slow parts were doing all the work and he just could not see it yet. So my rule now is give it at least 4 or 5 episodes if the acting is good, but if nothing has grabbed me by then I am out. Sometimes a show just needs room to breathe and some folks don't have the patience for it.
