The real reason I stopped skipping character backstory episodes
My buddy in Denver kept skipping the flashback episodes in Better Call Saul and then complained he didn't care about Kim. I finally watched one from season 4 again and realized those episodes are what make the payoff hit so hard. Anyone else used to fast forward through them and later regret it?

Payoff hitting hard" is exactly right, but I've got a sideways take. My old college roommate used to skip every scene with Walt's family in Breaking Bad and later admitted he missed half the show's tension. I started doing the same with Better Call Saul's black and white openers, and by season 6 I had to go back and rewatch half of them just to feel the ending land. Take this with a grain of salt, but the slow stuff is usually the stuff that makes the loud stuff matter.
