Visited a forge in rural Tennessee that used railroad track as an anvil

Watched a guy hammer out a set of tongs on a chunk of rail he found by the tracks, and I'm starting to think half the tools we buy are just for show - has anyone else seen good work come out of stuff that should be scrap?

I mean, a guy banging on scrap isn't exactly proof the whole industry is a scam, is it?
