That 200 dollar sharpener turned my blade into a butter knife

Picked up a fancy guided sharpener from a shop near Portland last weekend, figured it was foolproof. Set the angle at 20 degrees like the manual said, and after one pass on my favorite EDC, the edge feels like it rolled over on cardboard. I've been carrying that same Benchmade for 3 years and never had this happen with my old $15 stone. Anyone else find those clamp systems ruin an edge if you breathe wrong, or did I just get a dud unit?

Man, I bet that thing came with a warranty sticker that says "void if you actually use it." I watched a buddy wreck a $300 Sebenza on one of those clamp jobs, and he looked like he'd just dropped it off a cliff. Twenty degrees on the dial probably means twenty degrees plus the tilt of your coffee table, so you're basically sharpening at a random angle that changes with your breathing. My cheap stone at least has the decency to stay flat on the counter, even if I have to squint to see what I'm doing. Sounds like you bought a fancy way to make your knife into a spreader for soft cheese.
