My mentor in Philly told me to ditch the guard on my clippers for fades

Reminds me of learning to drive stick shift.

Why does nobody talk about the city permit process for a basement suite?

What specific rule change did they hit you with, @allen.william? Was it a new permit fee, or did they move the goalposts on zoning after you started building?

Changed my mind about using zip ties for everything after a client in Austin pointed out the mess.

Oh man, that hits home. I had a client just stare at a bundle of wires I'd done and go, "Is that... safe?" Felt awful. Switched to those hook and loop straps and a basic comb, takes a few extra minutes but man, the difference is night and day. It just looks like you give a crap, you know? Now I won't even start a bigger job without that stuff in my bag.

My uncle told me to stop using a boning knife on pork shoulders

Ever try to use a tool that's too fancy for the job? I once tried to carve a turkey with a paring knife. Let's just say it was a sad, stringy mess. Use what works for you.

Can we talk about the new pressure treated pine from the yard on Route 9?

Wait, are you sure it's the vacuum cycle doing the work? @jordans18, I always heard the real key is the pressure part after the vacuum. The vacuum pulls out the air, but then they need high pressure to really shove the treatment deep into the wood fibers. If the pressure stage is too short, it doesn't soak in enough no matter how long you vacuum. Maybe your new supplier just has a better overall process.
