Hot take: I visited a board game cafe in Montreal and the game selection was TERRIBLE

Went to this place called Le Joueur on St Denis last weekend with my crew. They hyped it up like it was some nerd paradise but 90% of their shelves were just Catan and Ticket to Ride expansions. Like 4 copies of Catan. Who needs that? I wanted to try something obscure or even a newer Euro game but nope. The owner said they just stock what sells to casuals. Guess the real geeks are staying home. Has anyone else seen a game cafe that actually caters to serious players or is this just how it is now?

One time I went to a board game cafe in Toronto and they had a copy of Mousetrap just sitting there unopened like some kind of ancient artifact. I asked the dude if they ever played it and he just stared at me.

Totally feel you on this. Catan and Ticket to Ride are like the basic white bread of board games. Most cafes just chase the casual crowd because that's where the money is. It's a bummer for people who actually want to try something new. Hope you find a spot with a more adventurous owner someday.
