Dropped $150 on those fancy welding magnets that are supposed to hold everything at perfect angles.
Bought a set of six from a well known brand online. First job, one of them slipped while I was tacking a railing together. Wasted an hour grinding out a bad weld. The other five went in a drawer and I went back to my beat up angle finder and a clamp. Has anyone else had better luck with a specific brand or are these things just for show?

Different brands aren't going to fix the core issue, those magnets are great for stick welding in a flat position but they just can't handle the heat and torque of MIG or TIG work on heavier material.

Haven't we all pushed one of those things to the point where it just lets go mid-weld? I've had a couple different square magnets and they all end up doing the same thing on anything thicker than 1/4 inch plate. The heat bleeds right into the brass casing and weakens the pull, plus the arc force pushes the work around. You basically have to baby them with short beads and let it cool between passes, which kills any kind of production speed. Seems like they're designed for a different world than what most of us are working in.
