Rigging cable snapped on a 600 pound tank, nobody got hurt but my ears are still ringing

Last month at the plant in Gary we were lifting a feed tank into place and the choker let go around the 10 foot mark. It hit the deck with a bang that sounded like a gunshot, bounced twice, and rolled under a scaffold. Foreman just stood there staring at the frayed wire for a solid minute before he said "well, that's why we clear the zone." Nobody was under it, which was pure luck since we had two guys on the platform right above. I checked every sling on the truck that afternoon and found two more with broken wires we would have used next week. Anyone else had a close call that made you redo your whole inspection routine?

Used to skip the pre-lift check, now I don't touch a hook without it.
