Spent 20 minutes talking to a retired fitter who made me rethink my whole process

Ran into an old guy at the union hall in Gary last Tuesday, he worked the mills back in the 70s. He said we rely too much on the layout tools and not enough on reading the steel itself. Watched him eyeball a seam and call the warpage within a sixteenth, took me three tries with a straightedge to match it. Got me thinking about how much I lean on digital stuff when the old methods still work fine. Anyone else ever had a senior guy drop a comment that stuck with you for weeks?
