The new guy marked a 6-inch test just from the tape marks

Dude was pre-fitting an 8-inch test plate off the girth tape's chalk line, said the fitter told him that's where it goes. I pulled out my 12-inch rule and showed him we had 3/16 gap on one side, he was sure I was lying until the tack welder started shaking his head. How do you get new hands to trust a straight edge over a pencil line without bruising their ego?
