I finally get why my book club hated that popular memoir last month

Had coffee with Sarah from my book club yesterday. She said the author came off as bragging about her struggles instead of being real about them. It hit different because I kept defending that book but now I see what they meant. The writing was good but the tone was off, like she was performing vulnerability instead of actually being vulnerable. Anyone else have a book they liked until someone pointed out something about the author's voice?

ugh i totally get that. i read some book last year that everyone loved and i was all in until my sister pointed out how the author kept talking about how hard things were but also mentioned her vacation home and it just hit different after that. its like once you see the fake humble thing you cant unsee it.
