My book club nearly fell apart over a 20 minute argument about the ending of The Road
We met at Dana's place in Sacramento last Tuesday and two members got into it about whether the boy was meant to be a symbol or just a kid, and it got so heated that one person left early. I stepped in and suggested we each write our take on an index card and read them out loud instead of talking over each other, which actually calmed things down. Has anyone found a good way to stop one person from running the whole discussion?
When Dana's place was the spot, did you notice if the loud person was actually the one who started the argument or just the one who kept it going? The index card trick works best if you read them out in random order so nobody can jump back in right after their own card. Curious what you'd do if the same person just talks over everyone again next month.
