Our group almost fell apart over a fantasy novel.

I was really upset because our last meeting turned into a yelling match about magic systems. But then, that heated argument led us to set new rules for how we pick books. What's the best way your club has handled a big disagreement?

Whoa, yelling over magic systems? That's next level! I can't imagine getting that mad about fictional rules. Our club once almost split because two people would not stop arguing about whether a certain character's actions made sense. It got so bad one person almost walked out. We ended up taking a vote to table the argument and just agree to disagree.

My old dueling club once banned pistols after a similar dispute over a rulebook.

Yeah we had a huge blowup over whether a book's ending was brilliant or total trash. Took a break, cooled off, and agreed to use secret ballots for our next pick so no one feels ganged up on. Setting some basic ground rules for discussion helped a ton, like no interrupting and no personal digs. Honestly it made the club stronger in the long run, lol. I feel for you and @jasonflores, these things get heated when people care.
