Question about book club debates on controversial endings

I spent $35 on a hardcover of a novel that had a polarizing ending, and it tore my group apart for three meetings has anyone else had a book club blow up over something like that?

The book club I'm in had a similar blowup over a popular thriller with an ending that felt like a cheat. I heard a podcast with a novelist who said endings are the hardest part because you can please everyone or make a point, but not both. Sometimes it just comes down to what the reader personally wants from a story, not whether it was well written.

Tore my group apart for three meetings" over a book ending? lmao that sounds a bit much honestly. Unless the author personally showed up and insulted everyone's taste it's just a story, not a political manifesto. You could always just agree to disagree and move on to the next book.
