Rant: my best friend pushed me to read a 900 page fantasy epic, I was so wrong to fight it

She told me for 3 months that the slow world building pays off by chapter 40, but I got bored at page 120 and called it self indulgent. Then my book club picked it for the August vote and I had no excuse, so I forced myself through the first half. By the end I was crying over a fictional wizard's sacrifice and I owe her a coffee date apology. The pacing still drags in the middle but that payoff hit me way harder than I expected. Anyone else have a friend who was annoyingly right about a book you swore you'd hate? How do you decide when to trust someone's opinion over your own first impression?
