That $45 hardcover anthology from 1998 finally paid for itself
Found an old sci-fi collection in a used bin for 45 bucks back in college, and last week my book club had a heated debate about whether short stories count as 'real books'. I pulled out one of the pieces from that thing to back up my point, and suddenly everyone wanted to borrow it. Has anyone else had an old purchase suddenly become the star of a discussion?

That bit about short stories not counting really hits home. I had a beat up old copy of "Dangerous Visions" that I got for like 8 bucks at a garage sale, and it sat on my shelf for years until a coworker started arguing that anthologies are just filler. I pulled out Ellison's intro and one of the weirder stories to prove a point, and suddenly three other people wanted to read it after me. Now it's the thing I grab whenever someone talks smack about collections, and it's been passed around my whole floor.
