The 5 dollar vegan cookbook that ended our bookstore fight

Last month at our club meeting we spent an hour arguing about whether character deaths need to serve the plot. Then someone brought up a 99 cent used copy of a vegan cookbook that had handwritten notes in the margins, and we got way more heated about those scribbles than the actual book debate. Has anyone else had a random find sidetrack your whole discussion?
