Update: our club picked a 700 page book for December and half of us quit by week two
We meet at a bar here in Spokane on the first Monday of each month, and back in October this newer guy named Doug pushed hard for a big history book, like 700 pages, and the vote was close so it won. I got to page 90 before I gave up, and I was not alone. By the second meeting there were four of us left out of eleven, and nobody wanted to be the one to say the book was killing the club. So I did it. I said flat out that I read the first chapter and skimmed the rest, and asked if we could just talk about that instead of pretending. The room went quiet for a second, then two other people admitted they never even started it. We ended up finishing the night arguing about short story collections versus doorstops, and we picked a 200 page novel on the spot. Has your group ever had to walk back a pick mid month, and how did you do it without somebody getting their feelings hurt?
That whole thing where nobody wants to speak up but everybody's thinking the same thing is basically every group project ever. Takes one person to say it out loud and suddenly the room exhales.
