Serious question, I had to pick between a Japanese hole punch and a traditional awl for a 300-page project. I went with the awl and my hands are still sore.

Next time try a leather palm guard, it's a total game changer.

Yeah @lily_craig, that reminds me of when I tried using a leather strop for my old wood plane. Totally shredded my palm before I figured out the grip. Had a blister for a week.
