A master gardener at the Seattle arboretum told me my pruning cuts were all wrong

She said I was leaving stubs that wouldn't heal right, so now I cut right at the branch collar even on thick limbs. Has anyone else had to unlearn bad habits from watching YouTube tutorials?

Seems like nitpicking unless your trees are actually dying from it.

I read a study from Oregon State that said even minor needle loss in pines can cut their lifespan by 15 years... little stuff adds up over time. I used to roll my eyes at people worrying about a few brown spots but that data got me. Now I figure it's better to pay attention early than lose a whole row of trees later.
