Can we talk about that week I nearly killed my prized peony collection?
Last May I had a disaster of a week with my peonies. I thought I was being clever by moving them to a sunnier spot in my backyard near Portland. But turns out I overestimated the soil drainage and three of my five plants got root rot within 5 days. It was heartbreaking seeing those blooms wilt after I spent $80 on them at the local nursery. Has anyone else messed up transplanting peonies and learned the hard way about drainage?

I read a gardening article that said peonies are like cranky old folks who hate being moved once they settle in. Sounded dramatic until I learned the hard way about drainage the same way you did. Now I just accept my peonies will be divas and test soil drainage before planting anything fancy.

Isn't that just most perennials though? They all hate being moved once they're comfy.
