Watched a vendor at the Columbus plant show sell a pothos with root rot, so now I quarantine every new plant for 2 weeks
I picked up a marble queen pothos at the Columbus plant swap back in March and didn't think twice about it. Set it right next to my 6 year old monstera like an idiot. Nine days later the monstera's lower leaves went yellow and the soil smelled like a wet basement. The vendor had been watering everything from one shared jug, probably the same jug the whole weekend. I lost two big leaves off the monstera and had to repot everything in that corner. Now every new plant sits alone on my laundry room shelf with its own saucer for 14 days before it meets the others. Anyone else have a swap or show story like this, and do you go longer than 2 weeks?
A shared watering jug at a swap is nasty, that thing is basically a petri dish by Sunday afternoon. Root rot and whatever else was brewing in there got into your monstera through the runoff, and nine days is fast for two big leaves to go. I'd stretch the quarantine to three weeks for anything from a swap, two weeks works for a store plant but swaps are a whole other level of risk.
