My uncle told me to always lay a dry course first on a big patio job, and after 20 years I finally get it.
I ignored him on a 500 square foot job in Phoenix last summer and ended up with a 3/4 inch slope error that took a whole day to tear out and fix, so has anyone else got an old tip that took you way too long to appreciate?

My dad's chalk line trick saved me last week.

Yeah, I used to think checking for level as you go was good enough. Then I had to pull up a whole walkway because the slope was off. Now I snap lines for every single course, no exceptions. It feels slow at first but it saves so much time fixing things later. Like @elizabeth349 said, those old chalk line tricks are the real deal.
