I finally figured out why my rice always came out mushy and it took me 3 months

Honestly I thought I was just bad at making rice. Tried different water ratios, different pots, even bought a cheap rice cooker from Walmart for $15. Still mushy. Finally my neighbor saw me rinsing the rice for like 2 seconds and told me I needed to rinse it for at least a minute until the water runs clear. Tried it last night and it actually worked. Has anyone else had a cooking basic take way too long to get right?
