Neighbor's tip about store brand spices actually made sense
My neighbor Pat in Toledo told me I was wasting cash on name brand spices after seeing my pantry. She said the store brand stuff at Aldi is basically the same, just cheaper. I swapped out my paprika and cumin last month, saved about $14 total, and honestly can't taste a difference in my chili. Anyone else made that switch or is there a spice you refuse to buy generic?

The real difference shows up in baking, not cooking. Store brand cinnamon or nutmeg can be weak one batch and strong the next, since the plants they source from change. For chili and other slow cooked dishes you will never notice, but for something like pumpkin pie where the spice is the whole point, I stick with name brand. Also check the grind on your paprika next time, the store brand from Aldi runs coarser and takes longer to bloom in oil.
