A friend in Berlin called my travel budget 'hopeless' and I had to agree

She looked at my plan for a week in Germany and said I was wasting cash on single train tickets and fancy hostels. Her exact words were, 'Get a regional day pass for 25 euros and share a private room in a guesthouse with three people.' I switched from booking everything alone to finding travel buddies online before the trip. Last month, splitting a room in Munich saved me 200 euros. Has anyone else found that teaming up for basics like lodging is the real game changer?

How did you even find people to split with online? I tried that once and it felt super risky. Your friend was totally right though, going solo on everything is a money trap. I learned the hard way in Italy last year. Splitting a villa with two others cut my costs in half. It's not just about the cash, it makes the trip more fun too.

Finding good people online is a total gamble. Mary309, you nailed it about the risk factor. I only try it with friends of friends now, or in small travel groups where people have some history. The money saved is amazing but coming home safe matters more.

What about checking out local hobby or sports groups in the area you're visiting? I joined a hiking club in Scotland last fall and ended up splitting a rental car with two people from it, which @mary309 would get. It felt safer because we already had a shared interest and met in person first.
