I scoffed at hostel loyalty programs until I got a free night in Barcelona
I always thought those hostel membership cards were a total scam. Figured they were just trying to get your email and sell you overpriced excursions. But last summer I was planning a 2 week trip through Spain on a super tight budget. I decided to try one of those free loyalty programs just to see what would happen. After staying at 5 different hostels from their network I had enough points for a free night at a spot right off La Rambla in Barcelona. That saved me around 45 euros which paid for two days of tapas and metro passes. Has anyone else actually gotten something useful from one of these programs or did I just get lucky?

Wait, you actually got a free night from one of those hostel loyalty cards? I honestly thought that was a myth, like finding a 20 euro bill on the street. Ive seen those programs advertise points but figured youd need to stay like 50 nights to get anything useful. Barcelona is expensive too, so saving 45 euros on lodging is huge for a budget trip. Did you have to sign up for a specific brand or was it just a general hostel network card? I might actually look into this for my next trip now.

Yeah, it was with Hostelling International (the HI card), only took 10 nights to get enough points for a free one. Just ask at check-in if they sell them, it's like 25 bucks for the card upfront.
