Last month in Lisbon I found a legit $8 dinner and nobody believes me
I was wandering around Alfama last month, not looking for anything special. A tiny old lady waved me into her courtyard kitchen, no sign out front, just locals eating. She served grilled sardines, bread, olives, and a glass of wine for 8 euros total. The tourist spots near the tram stop were charging 20 plus for half that. Anyone else got a story about a hidden local spot that wrecked every restaurant you found online?

My buddy swears he ate at a place in Bangkok where the menu was just a chalkboard with a pig drawing and the cook pointed at stuff. Paid like 2 bucks and still talks about that pad thai more than his actual wedding.

That Bangkok chalkboard thing gets me right in the feelings, man. I had a similar thing in a back alley in Naples, this old guy just pointed at a pot and handed me a spoon. Paid 4 bucks for the best ragu of my life and I still think about it more than most meals I've paid 50 for. It's like the second you stop looking, the real food finds you. And yeah, that old lady in Lisbon sounds like a legit unicorn, I completely believe you. The online stuff is always the crowded tourist trap version of what you actually want.
