My friend called my travel style 'luxury camping' and it stung a bit
I was telling a buddy about my last trip to Denver, proud I'd kept it under $400 for a week. I mentioned my nice tent, a small camp stove, and a cooler full of good food. He just laughed and said, 'Dude, that's not budget travel, that's luxury camping. You're bringing your whole kitchen.' He pointed out that I spent more on gear and fancy camp meals than I would have on a cheap hostel and grocery store sandwiches. It hit home. Next trip, I sold the fancy stove and just took a basic pot and a backpacker meal kit. I skipped the cooler and bought day-by-day. My pack was 15 pounds lighter and I saved about $75 right off the bat. Has anyone else had a friend call them out for overcomplicating a simple budget trip?

Man, that kind of comment can really stick with you. It's easy to get caught up in having the "right" gear and lose sight of the actual goal, which is just getting out there. Your buddy might have had a point, but it's awesome you took it as a chance to simplify things. Feeling that lighter pack and extra cash is the best proof you were on to something.
