Overheard a couple at the airport arguing about a $15 checked bag fee

It was in Denver last month, and they were really upset about the extra cost. It made me think how much travel has changed since I started backpacking in the 2000s. Back then, we'd just stuff everything into a carry-on and wear our bulkiest clothes to avoid any fees. Now, with all the extra charges, that old trick feels more like a basic need than a hack. I wonder what other simple, old-school habits have become essential for saving money now. Has anyone else had to bring back a trick they thought was outdated?

My friend Sarah got hit with a $50 change fee last week, which totally proves @thompson.brian's point about bringing your own stuff. I mean, she had to buy a six dollar bag of chips at the gate just to feel okay about it. It's wild how all those little fees add up so fast now.
