Tried the hostel kitchen to save cash... big mistake in Barcelona

I figured cooking my own meals at a hostel would cut costs big time on a 10 day trip last spring. Ended up spending like 40 euros on groceries that mostly got stolen from the shared fridge by the third day. The hostel kitchen was a war zone at 7pm with people fighting over the one working burner. Plus I had to buy salt, oil, and basic spices they supposedly had but were all empty. Next time I'll just hit up those little sandwich shops for 3 euro bocadillos instead of pretending I'm a chef on vacation. Anyone else have a hostel kitchen horror story?

Oh I learned that same lesson the hard way in Rome a few years back. I bought a whole bag of pasta and sauce only to find the shared spice rack was just an empty salt shaker and someone else's half-used oregano. Ended up eating bland noodles while watching people argue over who left the dirty pan in the sink. Hostel kitchens are a gamble I'm not willing to take anymore.

Oh totally @singh.jessica, I had the exact same situation at a hostel in Barcelona. I was so proud of myself for buying fresh veggies and some decent olive oil, went to cook and found the only pot was crusted with burnt rice from three days ago. I just stood there staring at it while some guy washed his socks in the sink. Hostel kitchens are honestly a trap, you either get lucky with the basics or you end up eating crackers in your bunk. I'm with you, I don't even bother anymore.

Bring your own camping stove next time. Total game changer.
