Bought a $30 bread maker off Facebook Marketplace and it actually cut my grocery bill by $40 a month

I was sure it was gonna be a waste of counter space but after 6 weeks of cranking out loaves for like 80 cents each I'm kicking myself for not doing this sooner, anyone else tried baking their own bread to save cash?

Did you actually track your total costs including electricity for the oven and the initial $30 investment for the machine? I've heard the savings can depend a lot on what kind of flour you buy and if you stick to basic recipes, not the fancy stuff with honey and seeds

Yeah, I actually did track everything for a while, @the_morgan, and you're right that the "fancy stuff" kills the savings. I stuck to basic white flour and water for my first few loaves, no honey or seeds, just to see if it was worth it. The electricity for the oven was maybe $0.30 per batch, which was basically nothing compared to the $5 I'd spend on a store loaf. The machine paid for itself after about 8 loaves, and now I'm saving maybe $2 per loaf on the cheap stuff. If you get into specialty flours, yeah, the cost jumps, but for everyday bread, it's been a solid win for me.
