My mom's Black Friday spreadsheet made me rethink my entire grocery budget
Two weeks ago I sat at my mom's kitchen table in Akron watching her pull up a spreadsheet she has kept since 2011. Every grocery trip she takes, she logs the total, the store, and how many meals it covered. Thanksgiving week she fed 14 people on $87 because she bought the turkey at 39 cents a pound back in October and froze it. I've been winging it at the store for years, grabbing whatever looks good, and my cart usually runs $180 to $210 for just me and my husband. She showed me a column where her cost per meal sits around $1.75, and mine was closer to $5 when I actually did the math later that week. It was not even about coupons, she just plans meals around what is already marked down and never shops hungry. I went home and started my own version of the sheet that Sunday and I am already down to $3.10 per meal. Does anyone else track cost per meal instead of just the weekly total, and what number do you aim for?
