Hot take: I used to ignore 1-star reviews until I saw the same complaint 12 times

I always figured low ratings were just angry people venting, but then I was looking at a hiking backpack on REI and noticed 12 separate reviews all said the hip belt buckle snapped after 3 months. That was way too specific to be random hate. So I changed my view and now I scan for repeated issues instead of overall star count. Has anyone else found a hidden flaw by digging through the bad reviews?

Honestly that's exactly what happened to me with a tent I was looking at. I saw 8 separate 1 star reviews all saying the zipper gets stuck after a few uses and the fabric tears near the pole sleeves. It was so specific I couldn't ignore it, and it saved me from wasting money on something that would fall apart. Tbh digging through the bad reviews is way more helpful than reading the perfect 5 star ones.

Eight times is a lot. That's basically someone telling you the same story over and over until you have to pay attention. It's like when you look at a restaurant and see five different people all say the service is slow and the food came out cold. You're not going to take that chance. I've noticed that same pattern with cheap tools too. You'll see a bunch of reviews saying the handle breaks after two uses or the blade won't stay sharp. Those patterns don't lie. They tell you way more about what you're actually buying than any perfect review ever will.
