Just realized I was writing fake reviews for years without knowing it

I used to post 5-star reviews on Amazon for products I never even bought, just to get those freebies from sellers. A buddy of mine called me out last month after he ordered a cheap phone charger I raved about and it almost caught fire. He sent me the listing photo and I saw the packaging was totally different from what I described. Now I feel like a jerk for misleading people and I'm deleting all those old reviews. Anyone else get caught up in those review-for-freebie programs and regret it?

Man, that's rough. My own fake review karma came back when I raved about a "flavor injector" that turned out to be a turkey baster in fancier packaging. Felt like a total dope when my neighbor asked for a refund because the "needle" was just a plastic tube. Live and learn, right? Deleting those things felt better than I expected.

Drove me nuts how long I had that "kitchen tool" review up, felt like I was advertising for bad turkey basters or something. The neighbor thing must have been awkward, I just had my sister laugh at me for recommending a garlic press that was basically a rock and a twig. Did you ever get the nerve to tell your neighbor you deleted it?
