Overheard a guy rant about plywood grain direction at the supply house

Stood in line at the lumber yard and this old timer was tearing into some kid about how he laid out his drawer boxes wrong because he ignored the grain. I always thought it was just a looks thing, but he said it affects how the screws hold and how the box stays square over time. Made me rethink how I cut my sheet goods, anyone else ever get schooled like that in public?

Wait, grain direction matters for screw holding? Never heard that one. I always figured plywood was plywood once it’s glued up. That old guy must’ve been doing this since dinosaurs roamed. Now I’m second guessing every drawer I’ve ever built. Screws strip out sideways, not along the grain, right? Guess I’ve been lucky so far.
